Rope museum

The Rope Museum is situated in the historic centre of Oudewater, in the original ropewalk. See, hear, feel and smell the story of the ‘Yellow Bellies’, as the town residents used to be called.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the town of Oudewater owed its prosperity to the rope industry, largely as a result of the huge demand for rope for fishing. Farmers in the area grew hemp for its fibres, which were used to make twine and rope. Learn all about this in the Rope Museum located in an old baanschuur, or winding shed.
